How beginners start

Every adult starts in Fundamentals. Classes cover movement, escapes, positional control and self-defence, taught in small steps and drilled with a partner. Live training is introduced gradually, and you can always sit a round out.

Then you move up

Once you've earned two stripes on your belt, Gi Comprehensive opens up: applied technique, live rolling and deeper strategy for intermediate and advanced students. No-Gi Comprehensive is open to students 13 and up.

Classes that fit a real schedule

  • Before work: 6:30 AM classes Tuesday to Friday.
  • Lunch: a noon drill class every weekday, 12:00 to 1:30 PM.
  • Evenings: fundamentals six nights a week.
  • Weekends: Sunday community open mat.

"I'm not in shape." Good.

You do jiu-jitsu to get fit, not the other way around. The technique protects you, the pace is yours, and the people next to you remember their first week. Members regularly start in their 30s, 40s and 50s. Read am I too old to start BJJ?

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need experience to join an adult BJJ class?

No. Fundamentals classes assume you have never trained and teach every technique step by step.

How fit do I need to be?

No minimum. The technique-first approach means you build fitness by training, and you can pace yourself.

Do I need a gi for the first class?

No. Wear tight-fitting athletic clothing with no zippers. The team will advise on a gi after your trial.

Gi or No-Gi first?

Either works. Gi is slower and more technical; No-Gi is faster. Many members train both. Read the guide to Gi vs No-Gi.

Your first class is free.

No experience or fitness needed. The team usually confirms within a few hours.
