Your first BJJ class is a beginner-friendly session: a warm-up, a few techniques taught step by step, then drilling them with a partner at your own pace. You do not have to spar on day one, you can tap or stop at any time, and at Vaughan Jiu-Jitsu Academy the first class is free.
Before you arrive
- Book a spot. Pick a Fundamentals class online. The team usually confirms within a few hours.
- Wear tight-fitting athletic clothing with no zippers, pockets or Velcro.
- Bring water and a change of clothes. Trim your nails.
- Eat light. A snack 30 to 60 minutes before class beats a full meal.
- Arrive 10 minutes early so a coach can meet you and ask about injuries and goals.
During class
1. Warm-up
Movement drills you'll use in jiu-jitsu: rolling, hip escapes ("shrimping") and getting up safely. Go at your own pace.
2. Technique
The coach shows a few related moves, often an escape, a position and a finish. You'll be paired with a good partner and drill each step slowly.
3. Live practice (optional)
Most classes end with live rounds. Beginners can join a controlled version, watch, or keep drilling. Tapping, a quick double tap on your partner or the mat, stops everything instantly.
After class
You'll be sore in new places and probably a bit surprised by how much you learned. Ask about memberships if you liked it. Nobody will chase you if you didn't.
